FLASHBACK: "Going Nowhere, Fast", my 1st autobio comic!

It's not the first mini-comic I made, but it is my first AUTOBIO mini-comic, self-published circa 2004. In this predecessor to "Epic Tales...", I'm doing my best ripoff of James Kochalka's "Sunburn".

NOTE: I think that the younger, more naive version of myself that existed at this time sent a copy to Kochalka, who was NOT impressed..

INTERLUDE: Life resumes, and I "Get [back] into Comix!"

I haven't updated this 'ol blog in quite some time, so I thought it might be a good opportunity to catch anyone who gives a shit, and I don't speak to regularly in the real world, up on what I'm doing.

As always, I'm still writing and drawing the weekly RECORD HEAT strip for the Phoenix New Times,, going to school ( I now officially have an AAS in Digital Art, and in the midst of attaining a Bachelor's degree ), and of course, spending time with my family (Shannon and I just had our 4th wedding anniversary).

Aside from that stuff, I've kept myself busy doing some little art projects, like drawing fliers, random sketches and whatnot. So, Here's a small smattering of images, most of which I already posted to my tumblr and/or Facebook:

This is pretty self-explanatory, but I was really happy with how this flier came out.

Anybody who knows my reading habits knows I'm semi-obsessed with the work of Jack Kirby, so what better way to honor one of my heroes than by butchering one of his drawings. The top pic is a scan of Kirby's pencils (which I stole from the Internet), and the bottom is the version with my inks and colors.

It inspired me to try my hand at doing a "pin-up" of Spider-Man, which has sat, unfinished. on my drawing board for about a month, now. I can't bring myself to complete the drawing because there is nothing more tedious than drawing all the web-details on this dude's costume; I probably should've done the black symbiote costume.

Switching gears, here's a pig I inked and painted with watercolors...

...which goes really well with the acrylic cow that has adorned my fridge for the last year or so.

Okay, about this thing...

Alright, now that I'm through with all that stuff, let's talk about "Get into Comix!". If you've been following this blog for a substantial amount of it's existence, you may have seen me mention this story and post preview images of it as far back as December of 2009. Additionally, I ran installments of this story in the "Epic Tales..." mini-comics in issues #6-9, and about 50 pages into the story, I hit a major wall. I couldn't figure out exactly how to do a certain page, so I took a break from it, and started to work on other stuff, sure I'd return to the story eventually.Life happened, and we had our daughter, and I went back to school, and eventually never came around. Well, until about 2 weeks ago.

The fact that I had this "massive" story (considering that the majority of my sequential work consists of  comic strips at this point, I consider anything above 50 pgs to be long-form storytelling) which was unfinished, sitting on a shelf & collecting dust, nagged at me for a long time. But, until recently, I just didn't have the time to delve back into it. Circumstances being what they are, I find myself with a little more time to work on comics nowadays, so I've plunged headfirst back into the "Get into Comix!" story.

Going forward, I've decided to repost the link to read the comic, in progress, on the homepage. I've also enabled the comments section so that maybe I can get some feedback from anyone willing to read through what's been posted so far. As of this post, I've just completed pg. 56, and I'd estimate about 10 more to go.
Once the initial story is finished, I plan on going back and redrawing the first 2-3 pages of the story (and probably some scattered panels throughout), so the illustrations are more closely aligned with my drawing style now, rather than circa 2010. Finally, I'm going to redo some of the clunkier narration/dialog in the story, and soon after, I'll begin worrying about how I'm gonna pay to get this thing printed. That being said, I'm pretty stoked to be this close to the finish line, and actively inching toward it everyday.

Okay.
Well, that's what's been going on.

Under Advisement

The constant anxiety of school tends to put me in a dour mood. I recently purchased an 11x17 scanner, so this is the first strip I've drawn on 11x14 Bristol board (which is considerably larger the 8.5x11 boards I normally work with); It's nice to have a little extra space to draw.

Also, here is the cover to "Epic Tales..."#9, which I'll be sending to the printer in the next month or so.

Prefatory Panic

I'm sure I've made other strips that are similar to this about how much stress I feel during the course of the semester, but it's no less true now.

I recently printed 50 copies of "Epic Tales..."#8 at a print shop (it's the first time I haven't done it all by myself, at Kinko's), in a slightly larger format; 7x8.5 (legal size, folded), with bristol covers. I'm not putting it up in the store because I need 'em to sell at various shows in the near future.
Here's a sketchcard I recently drew of Vaughn and Mark Bode's "Cobalt 60". I discovered this series in a friend's brother's collection of "Heavy Metal" magazines when I was in 7th grade (around the same time I found the original Ninja Turtle comics), and it's been stuck in my mind ever since.

And finally, here's a pic from my sketchbook of Crimson Cloak punching a Punk Rock Panda in the face... I've been working on a lot of autobio stuff recently, and I don't often get the opportunity to draw fisticuffs in those comics, so I thought I'd take a little break.

INTERLUDE: "... Punk Rock Pandas" update!

Here's the newly completed cover artwork for the "Genetically Modified Punk rock Pandas" minicomic, sans title.

BTW, I've decided that whenever I make a post that doesn't include an "Epic Tales..." strip, the title of said post will say "INTERLUDE", just because I'm that anal retentive.

Stuffs 'n stuff

I haven't drawn an "Epic Tales..." strip today because I'm posting this before I go to work, and I was planning on drawing a new one on my morning commute. But, I did want to share another page from the "Genetically Modified Punk Rock Pandas" minicomic I've been working on recently: BTW, a week or so ago I had an entry on the 'Repaneled blog' in which I redrew a panel from TMNT (my head is very much stuck in the world of mutant animals right now, I guess!)... You can see it here.

Here's the cover to the newest issue of the aforementioned "Epic Tales..." #7 minicomic, which will be available for purchase March 26th at the Underground Publishers Convention in Phoenix! I only made, like, 20 copies, so get there early.

Working on Stuff

I've been trying to finish up the last few pages of the 50 pg "Get into Comix!" story (that I've been working on forever) before I go back to school on the 17th, so I haven't had a chance to draw any strips; It sucks that I haven't been able to keep up, but I really wanna finish this damn comic!

Here's a panel from a page in the story that I recently drew, in which a slightly younger, unmarried and childless version of myself daydreams about having sex with a waitress at Denny's:

Mainstreaming

I read a lot of comics, up until 7th or 8th grade. I dropped off for a long time, but still read a couple comics here and there, once in a while. By the time I was in high school, the only comics I read were the ones I already owned, but I was still interested enough in the events and storylines in superhero comics to have had a subscription to "Wizard" (the comics magazine).

Nowadays, I read plenty of comics on a regular basis (indie and mainstream alike), and get my nerd-news by listening to a shitload of comics podcasts every day (which include, but are not limited to, Indie Spinner Rack, Around Comics, Comic Geek Speak, iFanboy, 11 o'Clock Comics, etc., etc.)

Yep.

I've expanded the 9-page online preview of the 'Crimson Cloak' comic to the full 27 pages of the minicomic, and also added the short story ("The Case of the Zombie Woman") featuring the same character, which was originally published in the 'Meanwhile' minicomic anthology! So, click on the links above and go read that shit, it's free!

"Epic Tales..." #2 is free, online!

So, now "Epic Tales..."#2 is online, at my Comic Space account, and listed in the 'More Comics' section of the right sidebar of this blog. I still have a few physical copies left of #2, so you can still buy it @ the online store, but I'm done reprinting it. It originally came out in December of 2006, and I feel it deserves a nice retirement (unless some large, conglomerate book publisher wants to put out a collection of my mini-comics, and write me a big-ass check, but I doubt it!) .

"Epic Tales..." #1 is free, online!

As I've said before, the vast majority of my old mini-comics are being posted online, and seeing as I am down to the last copy of the 1st issue of "Epic Tales..." (which debuted in March of 2006), I've decided to stop reprinting it and offer all 21 pages to read for free, online.

Old stuff is new again... again!!

Because I'm grumpy and tired, I decided to forgo drawing a strip today, and to instead rehash old stuff no one cares about! "First Bite: The Prequel to Zomburrito" was a 6 page minicomic I put out in Oct. 2006, just prior to a screening of a short film (that I participated in 'making', kinda) @ that year's "International Horror and SciFi Film Festival". Click the links and check 'em out!

Supporting the Big Guys

I really do have an excuse; I work in an industrial neighborhood, don't have a car, and Tempe Marketplace is the closest place to eat within walking distance. Yeah, so fuck you and your judging me!

Evac

Much apologies to David for including his name in yet another comic strip of mine about pooping.

Bald, White People

APE went pretty well, especially considering it was my first time behind a table there. No, I can't quite my day job, but I sold and traded enough minicomics to at least FEEL successful. Many thanks to all the people willing to buy comics from an unknown cartoonist, and all of our hotel-mates (Brandon, Amy, Jackie, David, Ben, JRC, etc.) for making it an awesome weekend!!!
